Buckman Pool Update September 14,2005 Community Walk-through at Buckman Pool Richard Bosch of Parks & Recreation and Justin Devers of Portland Public Schools conducted a community walk-through at Buckman Pool. On display was the condition of the pool, post-tile removal. Especially encouraging is the condition of the underlying concrete shell. There are no major visible cracks. A preliminary inspection by interested pool repair firms conjectures the major leak was due to broken gutter pipes and a much slower leak due to problematic installation of a main drain recently installed. Parks is working with a pool consultant to thoroughly investigate the pool shell and come up with recommended methods for repair, their costs and a life-cycle analysis. Parks will take the information and in concert with PPS and the community, select a proposed repair method. They will present the repair options at the next Buckman Community Association Board meeting October 6th. Based on input from this meeting, they will prepare an ordinance for funding the preferred repair method and propose it to City Council in mid-October. The community also learned that with the repair of the pool, Parks will take over maintenance of the pool systems, while PPS will continue to foot the utility bill and provide janitorial services. Programming will be conducted by Parks as in the past. A big thanks goes to Justin Devers, Randall Johnston and the members of his labor staff for accomplishing such a major, back-breaking demolition project on schedule and with big hearts. Please send an e-mail letter of thanks to these pool heroes. The Buckman Pool Heroes
